Well, let's start with a brief Wikipedia definition to be formal - Fusion-io is a computer hardware and software systems company based in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, that designs and manufactures what it calls a "new memory tier" based on NAND Flash memory technology.
Fusion-io is currently one of the most influencing worldwide Companies in solid state memories and NAND technology. InformaticaEasy.net has obtained an exclusive interview with Mr. David Flynn, Company CEO, that has been so kind to share with us his own view about that.
I have decided to put English language at the beginning of this article. First of all because the interview is originally in English and secondly because of the importance of this article in a scenario that involves not only Italian users but also non-Italian ones.
I think it's nice to start with a meaningful picture: here you can see Mr. Flynn during the IPO of the Company. New York Stock Exchange knows Fusion-io very well. Take a focused look at the photo... yes, you're right. Apple co-founder Mr. Steve Wozniak is here. For those who don't know, he plays a very relevant role in Fusion-io Company. Do you need further details? Well, just overtake the picture and start reading the interview!

Paolo Vinella: "Good morning Mr. Flynn, could you please briefly introduce yourself to my readers?"
Mr. Flynn: "Good morning. I’m David Flynn, co-founder and CEO of Fusion-io. I served as Chief Technology Officer in the early days of Fusion-io before becoming CEO."Paolo Vinella: "Fusion-IO plays a rising role of one of the most influent and largest solid state storage industry in worldwide scale. How would you define in your own words the company that you founded in 2006 with Mr. White?"
Mr. Flynn: "Thank you, I’m glad to hear that Fusion-io is also well known in Italy. Rick White and I cofounded Fusion-io when we saw that a new memory platform would help solve the data supply problem. As CPUs get faster, the gap between traditional storage and processor performance widens, creating a lot of inefficiency in the data center. When you factor in the amount of data we use in our lives today, it’s clear that we needed a new solution to help our information economy keep up with modern data demands.
Our Fusion ioMemory tier combines software and hardware to integrate flash in the server as a new memory via PCI Express, not just as a faster disk drive. This is what makes Fusion-io so different from SSD companies. With our software focus, we can integrate extensions like Auto Commit Memory, which was previewed in January 2012 with our one billion IOPS demonstration, as well as our Atomic Writes feature previewed last fall. We deliver the power of a SAN in the palm of your hand, and today, many customers around the world are accelerating their business with Fusion-io."Paolo Vinella: "I guess you were expecting a question on Mr. Wozniak. Well, for the readers who do not know, let us remember them that he plays a very important role in Fusion-io as Chief Scientist. How exciting is working with one of Steve Jobs’ best friends and Apple co-founder and genius?"
Mr. Flynn: "Steve Wozniak is an incredible visionary and we’re honored that he’s our Chief Scientist. Woz shares our belief that software is often the most efficient way to work out how to simplify complex hardware challenges. We’re very fortunate to be able to tap into his knowledge and experience. He’s also very energetic and creative, so it’s really inspiring for us to be able to work with him."Paolo Vinella: "About two years ago The Wall Street Journal expressed wide trust in Fusion-io naming it as the number one among promising ICT Companies. I guess we can start removing at all the adjective “promising” from that statement..."
Mr. Flynn: "Thank you. We’re very proud of how far we’ve come, but we have a lot of hard work ahead of us in continuing to lead the industry and help customers deal with the data that runs their businesses today."Paolo Vinella: "How important is in your opinion the role of solid state technology? Do you see and expect further improvements in the next future?"
Mr. Flynn: "Without software that cuts through all the SSD controllers and processors, solid state is just a faster disk. And as NAND flash gets denser, it becomes even less reliable, which causes some companies to only be able to deliver SLC products. Fusion-io’s software architecture enables us to integrate our ioDrive products as a new memory tier with the enterprise grade reliability needed by companies whose customers expect 24/7 service, whether on a social network or for nearly instantaneous financial transactions. I can’t speak for other companies, but rest assured that Fusion-io will keep on innovating our products to help our customers run more, faster."Paolo Vinella: "Solid state and hard drive memories. What is the boundary between these technology? Do you think they can both survive in near future or SSDs would become the next de-facto standard?"
Mr. Flynn: "It’s important to remember that storage can be used for two purposes: Data retention and data performance. Retaining data through time is something that can be done inexpensively with hard drive disks or even tape. When we look at maintaining data through time, we see that tape was displaced by disk, but it’s still around for archiving data. I think the same will happen with hard disks – they’ll eventually just become archival and displace tape.
Performance storage accelerates companies’ most critical data. These high performance storage products cost more than hard drive disks, but products like the Fusion ioDrive deliver powerful performance in the server for a fraction of the cost of using a scaled-out SAN for performance."Paolo Vinella: "Fusion-io is strong partner of HP, IBM, Dell and others. Why should users and companies consider a Fusion-io based system over competitors’ solutions?"
Mr. Flynn: "As I’ve mentioned, our cut-through architecture enables us to deliver ultra low latency performance and utmost reliability. With our server systems vendor relationships, Dell, IBM and HP, our customers know that these companies have tested our products to ensure they deliver what we claim they can. We also offer support that often goes above and beyond just making sure our products are functioning correctly. In fact, when you remove the I/O bottlenecks that inhibit systems, customers often discover new pain points related to other spots in their system, and our support team often helps customers fix those too."Paolo Vinella: "ioDrive family: a winning approach to solid state world, but also a state of the art microarchitecture based on interactions on multiple controllers. The first advantage over competitors’ solutions?"
Mr. Flynn: "The biggest difference is that our products provide a new memory tier, not just a faster disk drive. We go beyond the speeds and feeds to accelerate applications in the server. Trying to move data back and forth from server to SAN is like trying to suck an elephant through a straw. As the first company to recognize the potential of server-based acceleration, we have a number of patents on our technology, which means Fusion-io alone can provide true memory tier acceleration."Paolo Vinella: "Is Fusion-IO thinking about a deeper and more “standalone-user oriented” device offer? At the moment enthusiast users and high-end applications are the field on which the Company is focusing."
Mr. Flynn: "We are primarily focused on the enterprise, but we do offer a workstation product based on our ioMemory technology for digital content creation professionals. We have a team that focuses on how to help these customers spend more time creating and less time waiting."Paolo Vinella: "Fusion-io has recently previewed a new technology, Auto Commit Memory (ACM): it is a new logic way to think about the division between interactions of CPU, RAM and mass memory and, according to Fusion-IO, will <<which will further change what “memory” and “storage” mean in enterprise architectures>>. The result is an impressive billion 64byte IOPS. Correct me if I am wrong: Fusion-IO is trying to go beyond the so-well-known CPU-RAM-HDD bus-interactions used so far and from 20 years ago. What are the scenarios to which this technology can apply and how strong its impacts on computer systems can be?"
Mr. Flynn: "You’re quite correct – at Fusion-io, we see great potiential in bypassing traditional storage protocols through software extensions like ACM. We’ve leveraged this type of architecture in our Virtual Storage Layer software subsystem that enables our ioMemory products to deliver ultra low latency. The Auto Commit Memory extension goes a step further and will provide developers with new semantics to directly control the datapath to persistent memory, introducing a fundamentally new building block for how modern data systems are designed. We see significant potiential in this technology previewed in January 2012 – stay tuned for more as we continue to develop these types of software extensions for our ioMemory architecture."Paolo Vinella: "Thanks for being with us! ;-)"
Mr. Flynn: "Thank you very much. It’s always a pleasure to be able to share our story."
An huge thank to Mr. Flynn and Ms. McPee for the kind disposability.
-------------------------- TRADUZIONE IN LINGUA ITALIANA --------------------------
